Brits Nonwoven D15™ Filter – Pre-Cut Elements & Roll Format

The D15™ Filter gives a consistent performance with a 5µm barrier efficiency of ≥80% and an air permeability of ≥90%. Together with hand-washing, good sanitation and social distancing, the wearing of a suitable cloth mask with the D15™ Filter as a middle layer is a valuable weapon in the arsenal of the war against the COVID-19 virus.

The Current Challenge

COVID-19 is spread via micro droplets produced through talking, coughing or sneezing. These droplets can travel up to 2 metres and land on nearby surfaces, items and people. Many people do not know they have COVID-19, and unknowingly spread the virus. Together with hand-washing, good sanitation and social distancing, the wearing of a suitable mask is crucial to slowing the spread of the virus.

The World Health Organisation confirms this in their published bulletins. The following is from the WHO website, updated 29th March 2020.

Modes of Transmission of the COVID-19 Virus

Respiratory infections can be transmitted through droplets of different sizes. When droplet particles are >5-10µm in diameter, they are referred to as respiratory droplets, and droplet nuclei when <5µm in diameter. According to current evidence, COVID-19 in the public domain is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets. Droplet nuclei mainly occur in hospitals, where they have specialised masks. The primary mode of infection for the public is therefore respiratory droplets >5µm in size, which are generated by talking, coughing and sneezing.

A key to reducing the rate of infection is to disrupt this transport system for the virus by controlling respiratory droplets.

The filter system for masks that we have created is designed to do exactly that, trapping any particle 5µm and above. The mask (filter + envelope fabrics) actually traps many smaller particles as well, but the real holdout is targeted to be 90% for particles above 5µm.

Since the introduction of the D15™ Filter system, much work has been done to develop minimum requirements for COVID-19 protective masks for the public, resulting in the DTIC Recommended Guidelines for Fabric Face Masks.

D15™ Filter SANAS Performance Test Results

The D15™ Filter complies with the filter requirements as stated in the DTIC Fabric Face Mask Guidelines as published on 24 April 2020. The filter rating scores a 4 as per the industry requirements. Testing was performed against the Brits Nonwoven Private specifications, the DTIC Guidelines and the newly introduced rating system for filters and fabrics to be used for public face masks.

These guidelines set out a 75% minimum holdout for 5µm particles; see below for the rating scale and test results for the D15™ Filter.
